Colleges use student blogs to recruit new generation

May 16, 2007

According to a recent article on CNN.com, many colleges are using student blogs to recruit new students.  “Colleges seeking a competitive edge are increasingly enlisting and sometimes paying student bloggers to chronicle their lives online.  The results run the gamut from insightful to boring, but the goal is the same: to find a new way to win the attention of the MySpace generation.”

OwenBloggers

We in the library think it’s wonderful that the Owen students created OwenBloggers, a lively and often entertaining blog which both interests prospective students as well as current faculty, staff, and students. It’s an honest view of what’s happening in the school, the library, clubs, classes, and portrays what the students are really like.  And no one is paying them to do it, either.

We look forward to reading more next year!

Installation of New Light Fixtures

In an effort to enhance library study areas, new light fixtures are being installed on the 2nd floor this week.  There will be some unavoidable noise, dust and other minor disruptions from time to time, so we appreciate your patience while we make this important improvement to your study environment.  Some sections of the 2nd floor may be without light at times, but the stacks and library study rooms will remain available for your use.

Library Information for New Alumni

May 2, 2007

Alumni are welcome to visit the University Libraries and take advantage of their resources. An alumni ID card (available from the Commodore Card Office, 184 Sarratt Student Center, 322-2273, for a one-time $10 fee) gives you borrowing privileges and access to all the Vanderbilt Libraries. Adding cash to the Card at the Card office will allow for printing at all the libraries, including WML.

On-site Access, Borrowing, and Reference Services

After graduation, an Alumni VUCard provides all Vanderbilt alumni with access to the Walker Management Library and the other Vanderbilt libraries. In the Walker Library, alumni may check out books, use most electronic databases, and receive assistance with research.

Research Services

Alumni may request custom business information and research via Walker’s Business Information Service (615-322-2728; fax: 615-322-5136; bis@owen.vanderbilt.edu). The membership fee for this service is waived for Owen alumni and alumni receive a discounted research rate ($75/hour plus any incurred costs such as database charges).

Remote Access to Databases

As Owen alumni, you have remote access to several databases through the Walker Management Library. By using our Owen Alumni Databases, you’ll have access to a broad range of current business and general information, and from specific databases including Career Search, Vault and WetFeet.
